HEY ARES! HAPPY 2010!

2009 and the times spent with Ares will definitely be treasured. & the fac comm would like to thank everyone for being a part of this awesome red hot year! Here are some of the highlights:

1. Wow-ing the crowd at POP 2009 with our fac dance! (Special thanks to Chong Tee & Chit)
2. Making our presence felt and claiming the title at War Games 2009!
3. Coming together to organise a fun fair for a good cause (:

Of course there were many other small but equally awesome things that happened in between, like the first issue of RAW (our publication), the just for laughs video, pre-exam encouragement video, and our numerous EC-Meet-Fac sessions together. We enjoyed every minute of it; both the UPS that brought smiles to our faces and even the slight DOWNS that will only make us stronger.

Thanks for the memories, and we look forward to a great 2010 as one red, hot and rocking faculty!

Hey ARES!!!

We hope your holidays have been enjoyable for you, there’s less than 1 more month of holidays left so be sure to get outside and have your last bit of fun before we get back to mugging for our tests and exams :(

Anyway, here’s the much anticipated blog post about SPACEBAR 2009!

The 14^th of November was a truly memorable day for all Aresians. We gathered at the O’ Learys sports bar & grill for a night filled with fun, joy and laughter. There were many exciting performances by our talented Aresians, as well as games to keep us entertained throughout the night.

Spacebar 2009 was a great success, and we owe our thanks to the following people:

O’ Learys Bar & Grill, for providing us with such a beautiful place to hold our event

Harvey, the sound system dude who provided us with a cheap and good sound system for the event

Faculty teachers, for providing us with invaluable guidance and vetting our proposals one after another

Councillors, for helping us setup and clean up :D (thanks harrison we owe you one)

Faculty committee, for putting in their blood, sweat and tears into making this outing possible

1 DAY TO SPACE BAR!

it's just ONE DAY (!!!) before our much anticipated faculty event!
Just to recap, here are the details:

Event: Space Bar 2009
Venue: O'Leary's Bar and Grill 30 Raffles Avenue #01-04 Singapore Flyer
Time: 7pm-10pm++
Ticket Price: $10 (If you haven't bought one, fret not! Some tickets will be sold at the door)

Due to road diversions and road closures, some bus services and roads near our venue might be affected. These bus services are: 75, 77, 106, 171, 700, 700A, 857, 960 (SMRT) and 10, 36,57, 70, 70M, 97, 111, 133, 162M, 196, 502, 518 (SBS)

Do refer to SMRT and SBS websites for more information.

However, there is still access to the Singapore Flyer through certain roads. If you are coming by car/taxi, please take note of road closures. If you are coming by bus/mrt, you might want to consider taking this convenient shuttle bus service:

There is a shuttle bus service to the Singapore Flyer that comes every half an hour, from 10am-11pm. The pick-up point is at City Hall MRT (Bus stop between St. Andrew's Cathedral and The Adelphi, along Coleman Street). It will drop you off at the Singapore Flyer Coach Bay. However, it is $2 per head.

To make things easier, the Singapore Flyer is accessible by foot. From City Hall MRT station, walk through City Link. Look out for signages that will lead you to the Esplanade. Also, you should have heard about the food eating competition we are having! Each class is encouraged to send a pair to represent them in this food eating competition with a twist! Do come down to cheer your classmates on as well! So far, these are the participants:

Well, the much anticipated Ares Faculty Outing Space Bar is coming really really soon (!!!)

be prepared for good food, groovy music, great fun and awesome company! Here are the details again.

Venue: O'Leary's Bar & Grill (Singapore Flyer)
Time: 7pm-10pm

Dress code (optional): Anything space related; from a simple star on your shirt to a full darth vadar suit!

For the Glory of Ares

Clad in red and armed with truckloads of determination and fighting spirit, Aresians made their presence known and felt at the Festival of Sports 2009, held on the 27th of October. Although the purpose of FOS was to let our hair down and have fun after promos, emerging 1st in 4 out of 6 categories and bringing home the overall title definitely brought glory to Ares (:

Here's a quick recap of our road to victory:

Basketball Boys

Our boys displayed tremendous grit and determination as they executed aggressive and stunning play on court, and did not back down even when the going got tough. Eventually, they emerged as champions! Good job guys (:

Basketball Girls

Our basketball girls team showed that girls were capable of swift play on court too. They managed to edge out their opponents with sheer determination and skill, and emerged champions too! girl power (:

Netball

Our netballers executed consistently strong play, and were seen constantly cheering each other on as well. Exhibiting great team spirit and resolve on court, we saw some brilliant attacking and tight defense from them.They managed to secure straight wins. Great job girls!

Soccer

Despite finishing 4th, the Ares soccer team put up a better fight than their position gave them credit for; with their sparkling displays of attack only coming apart as a result of a combination of ill luck and a few loopholes in their defense. Still we are really proud of them for their effort (:

Volleyball (Boys)

The team was a little apprehensive about their chances at first, but boy did they rock the court! With killer spikes and players going all out for every ball, our boys fought extremely hard. Their last match was particularly intense, and they had many Aresians at the side-lines cheering their lungs out for them. Eventually, they emerged victorious (:

Volleyball (Girls)

The volleyball girls began with a tough match against Athena, and were unable to counter their fierce serves. However, they soon regained their confidence, exhibiting immense fighting spirit and won their other games with steady serves and some fierce spikes. They emerged 2nd. Way to go, girls! (Sorry for the lack of photos)

OVERALL CHAMPS WHOOOHOOOO.

to all the Aresians who gave their all on the court/pitch.

to Athena, Artemis and Apollo for a wonderful day of sports and games.

The 22nd of October was a special morning where there was no rushing to LTs for lectures, or dragging of feet to classrooms for tutorials.

Instead Ares gathered at the right wing to have a laid-back breakfast as a faculty (Makan), with good food (nasi lemak, kuehs, drinks, and the variety of 'pot luck' food), music for entertainment (friendly DJs You Jie and Yap Chien), and great company (Aresians ftw!)

We hope you had a relaxing and fun 1 hour with your fellow aresians (: Here are some photos! Credits to Miao Hanqing.

Now, coming up next is the FESTIVAL OF SPORTS (!!!)

On the 27th of October (2 days from now!), 6 teams of Aresians will be courageously taking the field in 4 sports: netball, volleyball, soccer and basketball. They will be pitting their skills against the other 3 faculties, for the glory of Ares! (Although the more important thing is to have fun (: )

We hope that everyone can come down to cheer your hearts out for them. Seeing that Ares is the God of War, we thought a war speech would be apt:

Faculty Breakfast; Makan!

ARESSS! Awesome job for surviving promos J1s!

Now that most if not all mugging has ceased (there's still PW we know, all the way!),
IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE AND LET THE ARES FACULTY SPIRIT SOAR!

In the months ahead, there will be numerous exciting faculty activities planned, so that's something to look forward to! (: When school reopens on Tuesday, we'll kick the Ares spirit into high gear with the first of the string of events, FACULTY BREAKFAST!

It's gonna be a morning of food and fun with your fellow Aresians!
Our breakfast will be held in the right wing, and we will be providing some food and drinks! However, we would still like to encourage classes to 'pot luck', and bring along your own food as well! the more the merrier (:

FACULTY SHIRT DESIGNS!

the fac comm went around surveying most of the J1 classes with 6 different variations of the brand new faculty shirt design that we came up with.
If you haven't seen the designs, here are the two shortlisted ones that received the most number of votes:

They're basically the same, just that the colour schemes are different. We will continue discussions on which one to ultimately go with. In the meantime, please feel free to give us your suggestions and comments regarding the design via your beloved CT reps (:

One of these will be the fac shirt design unique to our batch, the one that our juniors will don to conquer the field at orientation, and the one that ARES will be recognised by! Once again, we thank the pub I/Cs for all the hard work that has gone into the many many drafts and designs! And of course many many thanks to the Aresians who gave us really useful feedback (:

Anyway, here's an update on what the ares fac comm has been up to these days!

We originally thought of having a post blocks event to celebrate the end of the gruelling block test period, but that didnt work out due to h1n1. so for the time being we're kinda restricted from having mass events ): but hopefully we'll be able to have a faculty outing towards the end of the year! so take care of yourselves guys! stay strong & healthy (:

in the mean time,
J1 aresians! have you ever ooh-ed & ahh-ed at the seniors' cool ares pullovers (like the one worn by the ever so cute dep fac head 08/09 rachel chng in the picture below), and wished you had one too?

the fac comm is currently working on it! I'm sure your CT reps have surveyed the various classes on what you guys would prefer (pullover, jacket, hoodie, etc. etc.). so yup do approach any fac comm member with other suggestions you might have so we can design away (:

Other stuff we're working on now include the new fac shirt design & an ares publication, among other things.

That aside, this is totally random but today was the Hwa Chong Awards Presentation Day and guess who did us proud by receiving the prestigious All-Round Excellence Award?
He is none other than (drumroll...) the Faculty Head of Ares (2007-2008), Bryan Buan! (3rd from left)

& according to him he still visits our blog till now! so congrats to him, and all our other aresian seniors who received awards today, including our other fac head 07/08 jin yang (2nd from left) (:

Brave Hearts

WE FOUGHT BRAVELY THE PAST FEW WEEKS LIKE TRUE GODS OF WAR; AND WE MADE IT THROUGH!

The J1s completed our papers last week and the J2s had their last paper yesterday! (:

Entering the reading room the weeks leading up to blocks, we felt the tense mugging atmosphere alright! But after all the late nights and going through the seemingly endless pile of lecture notes, we did it!

GOOD JOB ARESIANS FOR SURVIVING THE BLOCK TEST PERIOD!
Also, Combined Sports Meet was held sometime back, and though there were only two faculty races this year, we're really proud of our gutsy athletes for making Ares' red hot presence felt on the track, and the Aresians who stayed on to holler our fearsome battle cries, and cheer them on! Oh and we hope our ares fans made the heat a little more bearable (:

HEY ARES!

YAY FOR THE JUNE HOLIDAYS!

We hope everyone has found some time in between the many holiday activities for some fun and relaxation, and of course GOOD LUCK WITH MUGGING FOR BLOCKS (!!!)

As for the Fac Comm, we came back not too long ago from our Faculty Committee Training Camp with the fac comms of the other 3 faculties. We have gotten to know each other and learnt a lot through the action-packed 2 days, with activities ranging from rafting to an urban trek from East Coast to Bishan! Quoting Activities I/C Daniel Yip, "The 10km didn't feel anywhere near 10km because i was with Ares!"

We're definitely all geared up for our term, and will give our best for the awesome Ares!

Potential dance I/Cs are required to come down on 2 days- 1 for an interview and on 13th May (Wednesday) to showcase their choreographed dance.

All interviews will be conducted in groups (e.g. 3-4 applicants will be interviewed together, generally by class, unless we had to swap your timings).

Do remember your time slot and come prepared, and on time. Should you be unable to make it for any reason, make a mutual swap with any of the other applicants and inform us of who you are and who you are swapping with at 94769038(Andrea) or 90668539(Warren) at least a day beforehand.

Here’s how you guys can prepare for the interviews:

Lastly, there has been an overwhelming response in terms of applicants (80 zomg), which only goes to show how enthusiastic we all are about our red-hot faculty. We officially held our Fac CIP today, and we want to thank everyone for putting in lots of effort in preparing for your stalls! :) We really hope you guys had fun with your fellow Aresians, classmates or otherwise. We'll be conducting a debrief next friday to afford the event some closure, so do reflect the day and think of some take aways that you may have gotten from the event. Holidays are in season! It's that happy time of the year once again when we get to take a break from school life and rediscover our youth :)

For all Ares Seniors, though the holidays do seem somewhat marred by the prospect of blocks next week, the studying will pay off eventually so let us not lose heart and put in our fullest effort for the tests ahead!

For our Ares juniors, do relish this fleeting moment of freedom as your turn will come in due time :D In the meantime, do spend some time together as a class to plan more in depth for the faculty CIP that will be coming up next week!!

On top of what you'll be selling, you guys also have to decide on your pricing policy, as well as appropriate stall decor. Here is a sneak peak of the location for visualization purposes:

The carnival will be spread along a long stretch:

This stretch. all the way down to the end, which is the entrance to the swimming pool where they will be holding their swimming meet. Stalls will be set up along the left side of this stretch, with backs facing the fence. Each class will be allocated one table and two chairs.

Yup there are actually 2 pools, this is the first, along with another view of the stretch that we'll be setting up our stalls.

On the right is the second pool, along with a view of a stand for spectators to watch the swim meet.

For those wondering, the coupons will be distributed on monday morning (we apologise for the delay, it took a while to get all of them chopped), so do make use of the short span of five days to sell your coupons and get your friends to come down!

Details on how to get to CCAB will be up soon. In any case, here's wishing everyone with holidays only to dream for! :D

Now that the ashes of the Post-Orientation Party have settled, it is time to reflect on a period where you, the newly minted Hwa Chongians, have experienced different facets of College life. We saw how you battled for the glory of our Faculty and shed blood and tears during war games. We heard you when you cheered your lungs out for your Faculty mates during Campfire. We bore witness to your unfailing dedication to learning the Faculty Dance. And last night, we saw this dedication translated into a tidal wave of red which rocked the Central Plaza. Although we did not clinch the title, it was evident that the spirit of our Faculty and enthusiasm of each and everyone of you present left a deep impression. We sincerely believe that this period of bonding has given you memories to cherish and remember and always remember, once we are united, the Aresian spirit never fails.

In closing, we want to thank the Faculty Committee for having 'indoctrinated' you in the ways of being an Aresian, and especially our suave and groovy Dance ICs Chit and Chong Tee for showing us what dedication and passion to your craft is.

Sup Ares! We had our final faculty dance practice on wednesday and here are some photos to show for it! :O

Of course, the massive turn out did bolster the atmosphere...

The awesome synchro was just as impressive...

And the room shaking cheering let everyone know that Ares is in the house :D

The Ares dance wasn't the only thing cranking up the heat - we got lots of hot Aresians as well :O

ARESIANS! Post orientation party is this friday and that's when we'll be showcasing our dance to the rest of the school. So please brush up on the steps and do seek help from your friends or senior faculty committee members if you need any last minute lessons! In any case, dancing is a great way to bond and have fun so don't forget to enjoy yourself! :)

Also, please remember that the attire for this friday is our RED ares faculty shirt and dark colored longs - we're going to steal the show as ONE red and fiery faculty :) Lastly, during POP, remember that jeering is never cool. The basis of the ARES SPIRIT is that we rock, nothing more, nothing less. And that's a message we're going to let all to hear, all to feel, all to know.

Dramafeste '09

Hey C1s!!!

Dramafeste is an annual theatre competition between the faculties, whereby each faculty pits their skills in theatre by producing a play each to be judged by professional judges, and for the audience's (the school population) entertainment! Dramafeste has always been one of Ares' strengths - winning various awards over the years; most recently, Teng Jingwei (08A11) and Joseph Tay (08A11) did Ares proud by winning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively in Dramafeste' 08!

Now you can be a part of Ares' Dramafeste legacy!! Be at LT5 from 4.30pm tomorrow to audition for one of several roles in the Dramafeste' 09 script. If you have experience handling a drama production and are interested in being part of the production crew, you are also welcome to come down to register your interest too!! HEY YO ARESIANS!

For those who came down for fac dance session today, you guys would have realized that we’re already more than 2/3 done with the dance! It’s really amazing how fast Aresians are picking up the steps (FYI: we took about 1 month to master the fac dance in 2008) and I’m quite sure by tomorrow’s session, we will be able to complete the WHOLE ARES FAC DANCE!!! (OOH AH AH AH OOH AH AH AH OH AH AH AH, ARES!)

On that note, the turnout for fac dance today was really good, with people who came over immediately after their lectures and others running all the way back during their CCA breaks to learn the routines. We’re really touched by your enthusiasm and passion to learn the dance so THANK YOU (: (: (: For those who were busy and missed out on the session today, NO FRETS! We’ll be recapping the steps during the dance session tomorrow. You guys could also stay back after the session and we could coach you guys in groups, we'll be more than willing to teach!!! (:

Tomorrow, the dance session will be 4pm at SALT centre Foyer at Hwachong High School section. High school guys should be pretty familiar with the directions so please lead the girls over if they are unsure of the venue! For those who cannot make it on time, do come down after your lessons because it’ll be easier for you guys to catch up. One of us will be waiting at the area outside audi at 3.40 to bring you over. We will be dancing till around 6 plus so do drop by it’s our utmost pleasure to teach yup (: FYI, On Thursday, we will dancing at the inner plaza.

Despite our numerical population disadvantage, we made up for what we lacked in quantity with our undeniably superior quality, eventually finishing just 4 measly points behind the yellow floating heads of Apollo. We really put in blood and sweat for the games and on the 6th of October the FOS battlefield was bathed in the red glory of Ares!!!

Dear JC Ones,

The promotional examinations are almost upon us. For some, it will be the first time they will be cramming so many papers in such a short space of time and scrambling to find precious minutes and hours. For others, it marks the culmination of a year's worth of blood, sweat and I bet, many tears. No matter which category you belong to, we would like to wish all of you the very best in the upcoming promotional examinations.

I still remember my promotional examinations in September/October 1990. I had been playing the fool for most of the year and was panicking. I was so hopeless in Economics that I decided to put my teacher out of her misery by volunteering to drop the subject 3 weeks before Promos. Basically, I didn't have much common sense to read Economics, I am still searching for some even today... In the end, I had to hedge everything on two A level subjects just to scrap a pass to get promoted. Back then, my classmates and I had very low expectations. We just want to get promoted. Thankfully, we managed to survive.

If there was one thing I took away from that experience, it is the belief one must have in oneself no matter how desperate the situation looks. Give it your best shot.

So there, grit your teeth, spend your time wisely and show your indomitable spirit.

Certainly, surely, RED is the color of the flame of passion, the heart of love, and the shirt of Ares. And as the school term comes to a close, yet another faculty event draws near - the FESTIVAL OF SPORTS. The sports that will be contested include:

Field soccer
Street soccer
Floorball
Street Netball
Basketball
Street basketball
Volleyball
Ultimate Frisbee

While the competition is at the inter CT level, a SIGNIFICANT number of faculty points are up for grabs if we all take part. The deadline for registration is on MONDAY (8th SEPTEMBER). Just like our national day banner - in unity lies strength, and if we all chip in and have some fun, we will make clear for all to see that WE are better than ALL THE REST.

on 29th aug (the day of teachers' day celebrations), we would like to wish all our CT and subject teachers a HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY.

thank you for your constant dedication and patience in dealing with us, 17- year- old young adults:) be it whether chasing us for homework (literally) or asking us to lower our volume etc etc, we appreciate the hard work and time spent in preparing for lectures, tutorials, consultations and most importantly, always being there for us:)

on top of all our CTs and subject tutors, we would like to thank our beloved SC AND EC- MR. TEH CHEE SIONG AND MRS JUNE NG:)

We'll always be reminded to give a pat on the backs of those whom have returned lost wallets:):):) On a serious note, thank you for being the coolest SC and EC around:):):)

To our Aresian seniors!

This is a post dedicated to all of you to wish you all the best and luck in the coming prelims and of course A levels too! Study break starts from tomorrow! But just to let you know that ARES gives you all the luck and all the JIAYOUS in the world for these last few laps of the race!
